The foundry Industry like any other has certain generic but several specific
characteristics and hence demands such skills for effective performance.
In addition to the normal business practices the foundryman has to deal
with many technology issues on a daily routine. This includes metallurgy,
refractories, fluid flow, heat and phase transfer.
The dichotomy of increasing demand in skills on one hand and severe
shortage of even yesterdays’ skills has made this Industry tend to move to
geographical locations where employment is available but not the best of
skills. Under these circumstances, countries like India, where a very high
level of technical education is available, have done reasonably well in
consolidating this Industry and providing a workable solution to many
casting requirements. Skills in metal casting per se has always been
available in the country.
This paper deals with the large number of skills required in the foundry
industry, ranging from pure technical ones to skills in management and
quality perspectives, and how they are addressed in an Indian Scenario.
