There is currently an interest in using quiescent mould filling to overcome
problems inherent in the casting of Ti alloys, particularly bubble
entrainment during the rapid mould filling necessitated by limited
superheat. As a first step, the Durville tilt casting process has been reevaluated
for casting Al alloys in sand and ceramic shell moulds and has
enhanced the understanding of the process parameters. Computer
simulations of surface turbulence during mould filling have been validated
by real-time X-ray radiography of practical casting trials using a computercontrolled
rotating wheel. Weibull’s statistical technique has been used to
characterise the scatter in the tensile properties of large numbers of test
bars. This shows that careful selection of the tilt filling parameters can
markedly improve the reliability of castings compared with conventional
gravity castings.
