Green sand molding has ever been playing an important role in modern
foundry, especially in the casting production of automobile parts. The aim
for a modern green sand molding requires the even distribution of mold
hardness with expected mold strength. For loose green sand, several
nonlinear problems must be met, including molding materials, molding
process and mold geometry. In order to improve the efficiency of
calculation, especially the accuracy of predicted results, some
mathematical models should be set up. In this paper, the mathematical
models of compacting process of green sand molding were developed by
experiment. Based on these models, finite element method was used to
simulate the compacting process and predict the hardness distribution of
green sand mold. The predicted results have a good agreement with the
measured ones.
