This paper discusses the use of the Prefil pressure filtration technique for
the on-line monitoring of molten metal quality. Over the past 10 years
Prefil has become established as one of the main metal quality monitoring
tools in aluminium. An introduction to the basic technique is followed by a
detailed explanation of the results, and their interpretation with reference
to specific case studies.
The real power of Prefil is realized when the Prefil characteristic for a
particular sample, obtained on-line, is compared with a pre-established
window for premium quality. Particular reference is made to the concept of
World Class Quality Windowsâ„¢, which allow the user to immediately
determine whether their molten metal quality is at the optimum level for
their process and/ or product. Several different types of window are
defined, and example uses of each given, with supplementary
metallographic evidence.
The use of the Prefil in aluminium is discussed in detail, and recent
developments in pressure filtration techniques for both copper and
magnesium alloys are introduced.
