A new device for determining hydrogen concentrations in aluminium alloys
has recently been developed. This new device is based on a calcium
zirconate electrochemical sensor and offers the foundryman a quantitative
device that is easy to use and gives accurate and reliable results in a
relatively short space of time.
This paper will detail the experiences from foundry trials and compare the
performance of the new device with other qualitative and quantitative
devices commonly used today to assess hydrogen concentration. The
potential advantages offered by the new device compared to conventional
techniques are discussed.
