Casting modeling software for porosity minimization often results in critical
parameter values, for example local values of temperature gradient,
solidus velocity, solidification time, gate velocity etc. Such parameter
combinations are termed criteria functions (CFs).
Work by Campbell on oxide bifilms and liquid metal damage motivated the
authors to re-examine experimental data accrued over fifteen years on
porosity in aluminum castings.
Results of tests on plate castings melted using distinctly differing methods
were re-examined. Melting methods included:
(a) induction melting
(b) reverbatory furnace melting
(c) resistance furnace melting
(d) gas fired melting
(e) heated ladle melting
Results indicate that use of an electrical resistance heated ladle melting,
where minimal disturbance occurs in melting plus a reduced number of
transfer operations, leads to significantly lower porosity in castings poured
and more reliable CFs.
