Inorganic binders: properties and experience

Foundries are constantly presented with new challenges in terms of
design requirements and in connection with the increasingly stringent
environmental and safety regulations.
Particularly problematic are evaporation, low-temperature carbonization
and cracking products released during casting and subsequent cooling
from the sand cores, which today are mainly produced from resin-bonded
silica sands.
Emissions and the related odours are not only released from the sand
cores during casting, but also during the coremaking process. Although
major efforts have been undertaken and considerable improvements in the
overall process achieved during the last few years, there are still a number
of problems to be solved. As a result the demand for alternative binder
systems has increased during the last few years, with especially inorganic
binders moving into the centre of attention.
Their use holds out the expectation of lower emissions and less odours
arising during coremaking and, above all, during casting, especially of
aluminium.
