Within the framework of the French radioactive waste management act,
the CEA has carried out a major R&D program on long-term interim
storage (temporary deposit) of high-level nuclear waste. The program
concerns container development, design of storage facilities, durability and
functional performance demonstrations.
This article focuses on the high level waste container development.
In addition to the geometry, the essential container design aspects are the
material selection and the package closure method. Ductile cast iron was
selected as the reference material and a full-thickness welding process
was developed to seal the container.
The development program has been performed to demonstrate the
technical feasibility of the container including specific metallurgical and
process improvements.
CTIF and SAFEM (cast iron foundry) participated technically in this
program in which several full scale prototypes were realized.
