To produce partially composed metal matrix composites, a new
spontaneous infiltration process was developed. The infiltration process
should be controlled by a wetting phenomenon; therefore, we discussed
how to improve the wettability based on the reactive wetting concept. The
SiC preforms infiltrated at 1173 K without pressure in air using Al-Si-3Mg
melts. The 60mmφ × 30mmh preforms were fabricated using a water glass
binder with Fe2O3 powder and for 2h and dried at 393K for 12h before the
infiltration. The infiltration rate was measured using a load sensor based
on the weight change of the preform with the infiltration. It was confirmed
that the infiltration rate was accelerated by the Fe2O3 powder addition.
