The development of designs regardless of product form has essentially
been an evolutionary rather than revolutionary process. Designers have
usually pushed the envelope in small increments building on their current
designs. As designs have developed and inadequate performance has
been expereinced, designs have become more and more conservative.
This usually manifests itself in the specification of more restrictive nondestructive
inspection requirements. The assumption in requiring more
and more restrictive non-destructive testing requirements is that the
different quality levels have some predictable effect on performance. This
paper provides a summary of current research work on steel castings, that
is directed at quantifying the effects of indications and illustrates ways in
which casting designs may overcome some common problems such as
hot tearing.
