The net shape forming of iron and steel by semisolid processing
(especially thixoforming) would be an optimum process. The process is
able to develop parts having advance qualities that combine the superior
material properties of ferrous alloys with the dimensional accuracy and
without harmful by-product. In this paper, the microstructural evolution of
steel and iron was investigated for making a technical map to get a proper
thixoforming condition, such as solid and liquid fraction, size of globular
grains, holding temperature and time. Based on the map, D2 tool steel
could be thixoformed by the machine which was developed to be
controlled an atmosphere. The demonstrator component shows that
thixoforming is an attractive manufacturing method to produce mechanical
parts which have a complicated shape and curved surface.
