Metallurgical and petroleum coke materials used as conductive packing
medium to surround the carbon products or as resistor medium in electric
graphitizing furnaces are compared to natural graphite, scrap electrodes
and usually used calcined and graphitized petroleum coke carbon raisers,
under laboratory and plant trials conditions. Carbon recovery and
dissolution rate, specific sulphur increasing, slag generation, chilling
tendency, shrinkage occurrence etc, are considered in cast irons
production. The parameters of cooling curves are connected to graphite
morphology, metal matrix make-up and chilling sensitiveness of carburized
cast irons. Recovered granular carbonic materials, previously used as
conductive or resistor medium were found as potential carbon raisers with
visible inoculation effects in cast irons, depending on their origin
(petroleum or metallurgical coke). Specific characteristics of these
products and their application fields are presented (as advantages and
limits), compared to conventional calcined and graphitized petroleum
coke, especially in grey irons production.
