A shift in the production of cast iron components away from the western
industrialised nations, and the emergence of Asian countries as producers
of significant volumes of cast iron, resulted in the reactivation of the
International Organization for Standardisation committee ISO TC 25 under
the Secretariat of the United Kingdom.
The first plenary of ISO/TC 25 held in 1998 agreed that a review and
revision of the published ISO standards for cast iron materials would take
place, standards would also be written for materials not covered. ISO/TC
25 has 50 member countries that account for 94% of the global production
of cast iron. This paper will review the work of TC25 whose aim has been
to introduce cast iron material standards that are both globally acceptable
and technically competent.
