Natural molding sand with a grain spectrum of 0.5 to 2.0 mm is used for
aluminium casting, particularly if the surface of the castings is required to
meet high standards. But the processes of molding and aluminium casting
cause the formation of hardened agglomerates in the natural sand.
This is particularly challenging for the solids mixer, because the
agglomerates need to be disintegrated first, before all solid components
can be homogenized by distributive mixing and get wet with water.
The paper presents a new preparation concept developed for a producing
aluminum foundry. By means of tests on laboratory scale a concept is
developed for a system that yields a higher throughput rate with optimized
mixer operation.
An up-to-date control system for the mixer optimizes the preparation
process, while keeping the energy input constant under changing material
and machinery parameters.
