Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) has a medium sized High Pressure
Die Casting facility at its Swindon plant. Capacity utilization was over 90%
in 2002 when the âEngineering Themeâ was set up to challenge the
facilityâs productivity and profitability. The aim was to create spare capacity
in existing equipment and to fill it by producing castings which were being
outsourced. Consequently this led to finding and solving problems, which
were both conventional and innovative in terms of management control
and technical complexity. The lessons learned have brought the company
closer to realizing its âpower of dreamsâ, successfully creating a near ideal
business cell. The experience has been shared worldwide and set new
benchmarks for future planning within the global organization.
