The present paper is dealing with the enhancement of aluminium die
casting tools, thanks to a patented coating, carried out by the PVD
process.
The choice of the coating constituents is based on a very low chemical
affinity with aluminium and alloys. The composition is chosen so as to
provide the highest hardness, and by consequence, the best abrasion
resistance. The thermodynamic stability is also controlled up to 800 °C
(1472 °F). The combination of those properties makes this nanocrystalline
coating the ideal solution to increase the performances of the
tooling.
After definition of the coating parameters, the coating development is
conducted using the P.E.M.S.® (Plasma Enhanced Magnetron Sputtering)
technology; state of the art solution for industrial deposition.
After laboratory experimentation, fields tests have been done and
demonstrate the high performance of the solution:
The protected moulds show a significantly increased resistance to
soldering.
The thermodynamic stability eliminates (to a large extent) the risk
of thermal fatigue damages (cracks)
The extremely high hardness of the coating makes it a very good
protection against abrasion, in particular close to the gates.
