Aluminium based metal matrix composite containing 15 weight percentage
of graphite particulates as reinforcement was synthesized using
stir-casting method. The properties like hardness, dry sliding wear
resistance and slurry erosive wear resistance of the composites were
investigated. Strip fluidity test was conducted to asses the flowability of the
melt mixture. The results of wear studies, both sliding wear and slurry
erosive wear, have shown that the resistance to wear decreased with the
inclusion of graphite as compared to base metal. The addition of graphite
particles decreased the hardness. The macrostructural and microstructural
studies of the MMC were made with particular emphasis on the distribution
of graphite particles in the matrix.
