This paper will consider the question ‘can South Africa make it as a global
supplier of aluminium castings’. Points shall be raised concerning how
important castings are to designers and purchasers of components and a
consideration of the foundries of the future.
There are a number of key challenges to be overcome by the South
African Foundry Industry and the author will discuss how South African
foundries investing in new technology can become global guppliers of
castings. Although primarily focusing on South Africa, the questions raised
are also relevant to foundries in the world over.
