Pressures on the castings industry caused by significant increases in raw
material prices during 2004 resulted in Precision Disc Castings performing
an evaluation of the melting of grey cast iron in their UK foundry.
Variables inherent in the melting process, melter charging sequence,
furnace additions and inoculating materials were evaluated using thermal
analysis techniques. Process variables were understood, and procedures
introduced to control melt quality. A cost rationalisation process was also
undertaken without adversely affecting product quality, the use of pig iron
was also reviewed.
The paper describes the work undertaken and details the benefits
provided by an in depth study of the fundamentals of cast iron melting and
solidification coupled to a clear understanding of the requirements of
modern high volume automotive grey iron casting production.
