Metallugical properties of cast materials and casting conditions effect on
the various defects. Especially the stress has influence on the defect such
as hot tear or cold crack. There are lots of needs for the thermal stress
analysis in casting process to control the defects concerning crack
generation or distortion during casting. In this paper, we studied the
relationship between thermal stress and crack generation using numerical
methods and experiments. We performed thermal stress analysis by
numerical methods and verified the numerical results through residual
stress measurement experiment, and investigated the effect of thermal
stress on crack generation. It is recognized that a numerical thermal stress
analysis is an effective tool for understanding the crack generation
mechanism because crack defect is easily generated in the early stage of
cooling.
