Double cavity casting of transmission case: a technical solution to a foundry capacity problem
Muneer AHMED
HONDA of the UK manufacturing Ltd., Swindon, UK
67th World Foundry Congress
Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) has a medium sized High Pressure
Die Casting facility at its Swindon plant. Capacity utilization was over 90%
in 2002 when the “Engineering Theme” was set up to challenge the
facility’s productivity and profitability. The aim was to create spare capacity
in existing equipment and to fill it by producing castings which were being
outsourced. Consequently this led to finding and solving problems, which

In the casting industry field, a lot of researches have been carried out to
maximize soundness and productivity and improve quality stability of mass
produced products. The researches on the optimum design by using
computer simulation have achieved a lot of accomplishments especially.
Their results are utilized to mass-produce sound products. There are some
difficulties to use the simulation in order to make the design of product. In

SAG is a producer of thixoforming raw material for worldwide use at
different producers of Semi Solid Metalforming serial parts.
The SAG subsidiary Thixalloy® Components Company produces by itself
complex designed Thixoforming parts in Alloy A356/A357 for different
applications. The production of weldable structure parts and weldable
pressure tight parts plays an important role as well as the production of
surface treated parts for i...

67th World Foundry Congress
Austenitic cast irons are used in a variety of applications including
automotive, chemical, petrochemical, food handling, marine, power plants,
pulp and paper and fluid handling. The alloys are basically of different
compositions with varying weight percentages of nickel and other alloying
elements. These alloys are a part of national and international
specifications and come in the flake and spheroidal graphite varieties.

67th World Foundry Congress
In this paper, the recent research progress conducted in the effect of
ultrasonic vibration on structure refinement of metals is briefly generalized.
As for Sn-Sb alloy, the matrix α phase can be obviously refined by the
ultrasonic treatment, with the broken and homogeneously dispersed
second-phase β (SnSb). For AZ81 Mg alloy, coarse grained equiaxed
structures are refined to spherical ones. As to ZL101 alloy, the introd...
